How do I choose a bike carrier for a van?

Choosing a bike carrier for vans is based on several parameters:

- The type of mounting compatible with your van

• Hinge mounting for Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Jumper, Opel Movano (from 2022) and Mercedes Sprinter vans.
• Chassis mounting for Ford Custom, Renault Master, Nissan NV400 and Opel Movano vans (before 2022)

- Taking into account the configuration of your van's chassis

If the chassis of your van does not allow the installation of a bike rack, you will need to add a chassis extension and suitable supports.

- The load capacity of your van

It is essential to ensure that the total weight of the van, including the bike carrier and the load carried, does not exceed the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) defined for the van.

- The length of your van's overhang once the bike rack is installed

If your van's overhang is too long with the bike carrier, it could rub on the road when going over speed bumps.

The bike racks in our VAN-BIKE range (VAN-BIKE 2 and VAN-BIKE 3) are highly modular. They are based on a common platform, but differ in the way they are attached. The VAN-BIKE 2 bike carrier attaches to the rear door hinges, while the VAN-BIKE 3 bike carrier attaches directly to the underside of the van chassis. Depending on the configuration of your van's chassis and the preferred mounting system, you can select the bike carrier model of your choice.

The bike racks in our VAN-BIKE range also have a platform that pivots through more than 90° and folds down, leaving the rear doors completely free to open for even greater convenience.

Last but not least, our bike carriers have a high load capacity of up to 80 kg, so you can safely transport heavy bikes such as EABs (electrically assisted bicycles). Our VAN-BIKE bike carriers can carry up to 2 electric bikes or 3 standard bikes, depending on your needs. For versions with 3 or 4 bikes, you'll need to contact us to check that they are technically compatible with your van.

How do I fit a bike rack on a van?

To install a bike rack on a van, you need to take into account the technical characteristics of your van. Depending on the configuration of your van's chassis, you'll need to choose a specific fixing system. Depending on the model, a bike rack can be fitted to the rear door hinges or directly under the van chassis. Whichever mounting system you choose, Mecatek's teams can help you install a VAN-BIKE bike carrier for your van.

Mecatek bike racks come with a complete fixing kit comprising bearing rails, wheel chocks with straps, fixing arms and clamps. You'll need to make sure that all these devices are properly locked before setting off. Simple to use and sturdy, these devices ensure that your bikes are held securely during the journey.

Respectez toujours la capacité de charge admissible et ne surchargez jamais le porte-vélos. Lors du transport sur ce porte-charges, veillez à ce que la charge soit suffisamment sécurisée (des dispositifs d’arrimage spéciaux peuvent être commandés séparément comme accessoires). Le conducteur du véhicule est responsable de l’arrimage du chargement. De plus, Il convient de contrôler régulièrement l’arrimage des vélos pendant vos trajets.

Lors de l’installation des vélos sur le porte-vélos, il est impératif de veiller à ce qu’aucun élément, notamment les guidons, ne puisse heurter les portes arrières ou les vitres arrières du véhicule. Le cas échéant, il faudra tourner les guidons des vélos de 90° pour qu’ils soient parallèles aux portes. Il faudra ainsi veiller à laisser au minimum un espace de 15 cm entre les guidons et le véhicule. Ainsi, vous pourrez voyager sans crainte d’abimer vos vélos ou votre fourgon.
