Motor home trailer hitch
Equipping your motorhome with a trailer hitch
A trailer hitch is an essential piece of equipment for towing a trailer, enabling even the heaviest and bulkiest equipment to be transported efficiently.
A motorhome hitch works in the same way as a car hitch, except that to install a trailer hitch on a motorhome, it is essential to ensure that the hitch is compatible with the chassis of the motorhome, that it is type-approved and that the vehicle registration document is compatible with a towing load issued by the manufacturer (COC).

Why install a towbar on a motorhome?
Installing a towbar or trailer hitch on your motorhome is advantageous in more ways than one. The main advantage is the added versatility it gives you on your journeys. External bicycle rack on a ball or external storage box on a small load carrier. Motorhomes offer a certain amount of interior space and plenty of storage space, but are often faced with a problem when additional volume or weight is required. The volume or weight of some of this equipment can only be transferred to a trailer or external load carrier. By fitting a trailer hitch to your motorhome, you can transport your most bulky equipment in a safe and appropriate way.
Installing an approved towbar or trailer coupling on your motorhome will enable you to travel with your heavy and bulky equipment more safely. It is also important to know that all objects loaded in the motorhome or trailer must be held securely and are your sole responsibility when the vehicle is in motion. It is also essential to secure the contents of the motorhome (drawers, doors, curtains, blinds, etc.) before each departure to avoid any risk of accident.
By fitting a trailer hitch to your motorhome, you'll be able to tow different types of trailer: luggage trailers, car carriers, boat trailers, vans or cross trailers for transporting your motorbike, scooter and/or bicycles.
A motorhome fitted with a towbar is therefore the ideal solution for rapidly gaining storage space and available load capacity, while keeping the motorhome's payload up to date.
How do you choose your motorhome towbar?
Although Mecatek towbars are compatible with a large number of carriers of all makes and all types of vehicle (motorhome with overhang, profile, integrated, van or panel van), you should always have a professional check the feasibility of fitting a towbar to your motorhome. Many manufacturers equip their models with specific extensions.
Certain constraints linked to the configuration of your motorhome's chassis may require the fitting of extensions or adapted towbar brackets. As an independent manufacturer of towbars for leisure vehicles for many years, Mecatek can advise you on the choice of towbars to install on your motorhome.
First of all, ask for a towbar that is compatible with the chassis of your motorhome. To do this, check box F3 on your vehicle registration document. This box defines whether or not a trailer can be towed, as well as the weight that can be towed:
- Standard chassis (< 3.5 T)
- Heavy goods vehicle chassis (> 3.5 T)
You should also make sure that you comply with the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the motorhome (including the tow bar).
Check that the towbar on your motorhome contains all the components needed for installation (extension lead, towball, brackets, wiring harnesses).
Finally, all the towbars offered by Mecatek have undergone laboratory resistance tests and road tests in all conditions (rough roads, dirt tracks, speed bumps, etc.) to guarantee their reliability.
